Weapons of France - CHARLIE HEBDO attack in Paris



On January 7th, two gunmen armed with AK-47's attacked the French newspaper CHARLIE HEBDO in Paris, France. They killed 12 and wounded 11 others during the attack, including 2 police officers. The perpetrators escaped and immediately all of France was put into alert and the hunt began.  Police and military units from all over France mobilized and were heavily armed to combat the perpetrators believed to be islamic extremists.  The hunt lasted until January 9th with additional casualties that amounted to 20 killed (including 3 terrorists) and 21 wounded.

Here's is a list of weapons used by France's police and military involved during the crisis:

1. Beretta M12 Submachine Gun (9x19mm Parabellum)

Designed in Italy in 1950 and still in production. It has a 7.9 in. barrel, the action is blowback and has selective fire with single or full auto at 550 rounds/min with a maximum effective range of 200 meters and comes standard with 32-round magazines.  It is 25.4 in. long and 16.5 in. when collapsed with the side folding stock and weights 6.61 lbs.

































2. Heckler & Koch UMP9 Submachine Gun (9x19mm Parabellum)

Designed in Germany to replace the MP5 series SMG's, it was first produced in 1998.  It has an 8 in. barrel, the action is blowback, closed bolt and has selective fire of 650 rounds/min with an effective range of 100 meters.  It comes standard with 30-round magazines.  It is 27.2 in. long and 17.7 in when folded and weights 5.2 lbs.








































3. Heckler & Koch MP5SD Suppressed Submachine Gun (9x19mm Parabellum)

A suppressed variant, select fire version of the MP5 designed in 1974 in West Germany, it has a 5.7 in. barrel with a roller-delayed blowback action, and fires from a closed bolt position at 700 rounds/min at full auto.  It has an effective range of 150 meters.  It comes standard with 30-round magazines and is 31.7 in. long and 26.4 in. when stock is collapsed and weights 6.2 lbs.






































4. Ruger Mini-14 Semi-automatic Rifle (5.56x45mm)

Issued to French CRS Police, it was designed back in 1967 and made in the USA based on the 7.62mm M14 rifle, hence the name "Mini-14".  It is a gas-operated, rotating bold action with a barrel that is 18.5 in. long.  Capable of semi-auto fire only, it is able to hits targets at over 400 meters.  It is 37.25 in. long and weights 6.375 lbs.  French Mini-14's have 20-round magazines and checkering on the stocks for better grip.  Earlier versions have wood and newer rifles black plastic heatshields.



































5. SIG SG551 Carbine (5.56x45mm)

A compact version of the swiss designed SG550 assault rifle, it is gas operated, rotating bolt action with a 14.3 in. barrel.  Available with selective fire: single, three-round-burst, and full auto at 650 rounds/min with an effective range of 400 meters.  It comes standard with 20 or 30-round magazines.  It is 32.8 in. long, 23.9 in. with stock folded and weights 7.5 lbs.



6. COLT Commando Carbine (5.56x45mm)

A compact version of the M16 rifle, it is gas-operated, rotating bolt action (Direct impingement) with an 11.5 in. barrel.  Available in selective fire three-round-burst, full auto, or a combination of all which fires at 650-750 rounds/min.  It comes standard with 30-round magazines.  It is 32.5 in. long and 29.8 in. with stock collapsed and weights 5.35 lbs.
































7. FAMAS F1 Bullpup Assault Rifle (5.56x45mm)

Designed in France and in service since 1981, it is the standard service rifle of the French Armed Forces.  The action is lever-delayed blowback with a 19.2 in. barrel.  Available in selective fire with three-round burst and full auto at 900-1000 rounds/min.  The F1 comes standard with 25-round magazines, it is 29.8 in. long and weights 7.96 lbs.

































8. H&K G36C Carbine (5.56x45mm)
This is the subcompact version of the G36 service rifle designed in Germany in 1990 that uses a short-stroke piston, rotating bolt action with a 9 in. barrel.  Available in selective fire with three-round burst and full auto at 750 rounds/min.  It comes standard with 30-round magazines, it is 28.3 in. long, 19.7 in. with stock folded, and weights 6.2 lbs.





























9. H&K HK416 Assault Rifle (5.56x45mm)

Designed in Germany as a short-stroke piston version of the M4 Carbine and is available with a 14.5 and 16 in. barrel.  It is a selective fire with single and full auto at 700-900 rounds/min. It comes standard with 30-round magazines, its 35.4 in. long, 31.7 in. with stock collapsed, and weights 7.69 lbs. (14.5 in. version).


10. H&K G3 Battle Rifle (7.62x51mm)


Designed in the 1950s in West Germany, it uses the roller-delayed blowback action and comes standard with a 17.7 in. barrel.  Available in selective fire single and full auto at 500-600 rounds/min.  It uses 20-round magazines, is 40.4 in. long, 33.1 in. with stock collapsed, and weights 10 lbs.






















11. H&K HK417 Battle Rifle (7.62x51mm)

Developed in Germany recently, it is a short-stroke, rotating bolt action rifle with 16.5 in. or 20 in. barrel.  Available in selective fire single and full auto at 600 rounds/min.  It uses 20-round magazines, is 39.1 in. long, 36 in. with stock collapsed, and weights 9.7 lbs.





































12. Benelli M4 Super 90 Semi-automatic Shotgun (12 gauge)

Designed in Italy in 1998, it uses gas-operated, rotating bolt action with a 14 in. barrel.  It has an internal tube magazine with a capacity of 7-rounds of 2.75" or 3" shells.  It measures 35.5 in. long and weights 8 lbs.
